Chapter 147 Could that woman really be Claire? He was about to bring it up with Ethan, but swallowed his words before they left his mouth.
Even though he had been engrossed in academic discussions lately, he hadn't completely missed the whispers about the Linwood family.
In the mere two months since Claire's release, she had been hospitalized several times, each twith severe injuries. The doctors and nurses had started to talk.
Who ends up in the hospital so often and with such injuries? This made him question whether Claire was truly the bully of Vanessa, as the Linwood family claimed.
If she was the one causing trouble, why was it always Claire who ended up in the hospital and not Vanessa? Last tit was lash marks all over her body and a broken pinky; this time, there was a gaping wound on the back of her head that nearly got infected.
Victor recalled the night Claire had fled to Southtown, attempting to catch a train to Hillspire City.

At the time, he was entirely on Vanessa's side, treating Claire with utter disdain.
Only later did he realize Claire was utterly disillusioned with the Linwood family, which was why she was so reluctant to return.
This time, it seemed she was heartbroken by them again, which is why she seized the chance to leave when no one was watching.
He was lost in thought, not even hearing Ethan speaking to him.
"Victor?" Snapping back to reality, Victor replied, "What is it?" "Where do you think Claire might have gone? Could she have fled to another city, like last time?" Ethan asked, his brows furrowed.
Victor gave a noncommittal response, "Possibly." "Claire has no money and is in such poor health. What if she encounters danger out there? Why is she so stubborn? Can't she just talk things out with the family instead of causing such endless trouble..." Ethan's incessant complaints, combined with the mention of how Irene had almost been strangled when she woke up yesterday, made Victor want to tell him to shut up.
Irene had admitted that Claire was never the one to harm her. Her awakening could only benefit Claire, not harm her. Claire would have to be mad to try and strangle her.
The answer was clear as day.
Even though he didn't want to admit it, the truth was the truth.
If he could see it, he refused to believe Ethan couldn't. The only explanation was that Ethan did see it but chose to ignore it, deliberately protecting Vanessa. No wonder Claire was upset.
If he were in Claire's shoes, falsely accused of attempted murder by his own brother and having served five years for a crhe didn't commit, he'd feel murderous too.
It was no surprise Claire wanted to escape; the Linwood family treated her and Vanessa so differently.

Reflecting on his own bias against Claire over the years, always meeting her with harsh words, filled him with frustration. A man of his standing, known for his integrity, had been used like a pawn, following orders like a fool.
Through the glass of the hospital room door, he caught a glimpse of Nathan comforting a tearful Vanessa, and Victor's expression darkened.
Nathan was completely oblivious. Instead of defending his wronged daughter he was busy coddling his adopted one. "I have work to do, so I'll leave you to it," Victor said abruptly.
Without another word, he walked away.
Victor didn't return to his office but instead headed toward the surveillance room.
Irene's room was a VIP suite, equipped with cameras for monitoring her condition.
However, when he arrived to review the footage, the computer screen displayed the words "Video file deleted."
