Chapter 123 Claire heard Brian's roar, and her body trembled slightly, but she quickly steadied herself.

Irene had woken up, and soon she would be exonerated from the murder charge. Now, it wasn't Claire who should be afraid.

It was Vanessa.

And Ethan, Vincent, Brian-all those who had wronged her.

She was intensely curious about the expressions they would have once the truth was revealed.

Claire straightened her back, feeling more confident than ever before.

A faint, cold smile played on her lips as she looked at him mockingly.

When Brian met her calm gaze, his heart skipped a beat.

In that moment, he realized Claire had changed.

Her entire demeanor had undergone a radical transformation, inside and out.

In the past, Claire would tremble like a mouse before a cat whenever she saw him.

But now, she not only dared to meet his eyes but also looked at him with a mocking gaze, as if he were a complete failure.

She stood beside the hospital bed, holding the hand of the frail Irene.

Both women were equally emaciated, their complexions sallow, and even the bruises on their necks were eerily similar.

For a fleeting moment, Brian felt an uncanny sense of empathy between Claire and Irene.

A creeping fear spread through him; he dared not ponder why he was afraid or what he was truly afraid of.

It seemed that once he figured it all out, he would fall into an abyss from which there was no return.

Brian shifted his gaze away from Claire, suppressing a flood of emotions, and instructed the doctor to examine Irene.

The room fell into a deathly silence.

Everyone's attention was on Irene, except for Claire, whose piercing gaze was fixed on Vanessa.

Vanessa was visibly terrified, like a startled bird, her body trembling uncontrollably.

She screamed internally: Why wasn't Irene strangled to death? Why couldn't she just die? Her terror was not just about pushing Irene down the stairs, but also because Irene had overheard every word she and Nathan had spoken years ago. Once Irene spoke out, there would be no escape for her or Nathan. That was why she had pushed Irene down the stairs, determined to see her dead.

While everyone's attention was on Irene, Vanessa planned to escape, inform her father, and flee with her family immediately.

Just as she took a step toward the door, Claire's taunting voice echoed like a ghost, "Miss Vanessa, leaving so soon? Don't you want to witness your best friend's miraculous recovery?" Vanessa froze, looking at Claire in terror.

Claire's words shifted everyone's focus onto Vanessa.

Vanessa's face was ghostly pale, panic and fear written all over her eyes.

Vincent and Ethan noticed something amiss and turned their puzzled gazes toward Vanessa.

Ethan asked with concern, "Vanessa, what's wrong? You look unwell."

Vanessa twisted her hands nervously, her eyes darting around, stammering, "-suddenly don't feel very well."

Vincent stepped forward, gently supporting her, "If you're not feeling e well lettake you to see a doctor." With that, he started to lead Vanessa away.

"Stop!" Claire's sharp command startled both Vanessa and Vincent.

Vincent frowned in displeasure and was about to reprimand Claire when she interrupted with a cold expression. "There's a doctor right here. Taking her outside means waiting in line and registering a lot of hassle." Her words left Vincent speechless.

Though he disliked Claire's assertive tone, he couldn't deny the logic in her reasoning.
