Chapter 60 James slowly opened his eyes with a deep look in his gaze. “What's Rhett got to do, sticking hist nose into Vincent's business?” James hadn't pegged Rhett as the meddleselder brother type.
Bill was kinda worried, the FitzGerald family and the Turner family in Silvergrove City were on Kristin's case like white on rice. “Mr. Bryce, the FitzGerald family and the Turner family are giving Ms. Turner the runaround. Do you want to tangle with this hot mess?” James let out a derisive chuckle. “As for the d| choose to shield, what can the FitzGerald family and the Turner family do about it? Besides, Rhett is not the kind to poke his nose into others‘ business.” “But Mr. FitzGerald is still on the hunt for her,” Bill uttered, not sure how to handle it.
“Let him,” James said curtly before hanging up the phone.
Tossing his phone aside, James got up and walked to the living room door.
His hand froze mid-air, and he rubbed his temples before entering his bedroom.
Just let Kristin have a good rest.
Bright and early the next day, Kristin got up at the crack of dawn. She was new on the job and had morning shifts all week. She needed to get going early for the handover.
Rifling through the fridge, Kristin noted that James‘ place really lacked any homey vibes. Aside from a few eggs, you couldn’t scrounge up any other ingredients.
Clear as day, James didn’t bother with a housekeeper and never ate at home.
Dashing out of the complex, Kristin, card in hand, picked out groceries with serious intent at the supermarket right outside these fancy neighborhoods. The prices were through the roof. A single cabbage cost a whopping ten bucks.
Head hanging as she went to pay, Kristin consoled herself. After all, it wasn’t her money she was spending.
After getting the groceries, Kristin whipped up breakfast and set it on the dining table.
The doorbell rang.
James, roused from sleep, walked out a bit cranky, clad in his robe, leaning against the door frall lazy and devil-may-care. “Who's there?” Seeing the breakfast Kristin had made, there was a split second of surprise in James’ eyes. It occurred to him that the esteemed Ms. Turner had actually prepared breakfast, and it actually looked pretty decent.
James, who never ate breakfast at home, suddenly felt his appetite kick in.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt11:40 At the door, Kristin opened the door and looked up, freezing on the spot.
Shock plastered on her face, and her throat seemed to clog up.
What was Rhett doing in Crescendo Town? Rhett’'s mood was foul, his expression tired as if he hadn't slept all night.
Kristin panicked, instinctively turning to run.
She feared Rhett was in cahoots with the FitzGerald family, coming to snatch her away.
“Running for what!” Rhett furrowed his brow as he grabbed Kristin's wrist.
Kristin turned as pale as a ghost, trembling all over. She couldn't go back or be dragged back to Silvergrove City.
She’d be done for.
“Mr. FitzGerald, bright and early... you sure know how to surprise me.” James leaned against the dining table, a half-smile on his face. “You call the way to my place?” Rhett was stern. “I'm taking her with me.” “Mr. FitzGerald, coming over to my place in the morning to take my woman? That's not cool, is it?” James walked over and pulled Kristin into his embrace.
Kristin kept shaking, inexplicably unable to meet Rhett’'s gaze. She feared seeing disappointment in his eyes.
In the end... she had chosen this path.
-Is Kristin kept as a mistress? Or... is she selling her body and soul? But she had no other choice, because James was Summer's father.
Rhett’s look at Kristin was indeed full of disappointment. He hadn't expected her to choose this path.
“I've sorted out Summer's schooling, and I'll handle the FitzGerald family and Turner, family for you. Think it over,” Rhett said. He wasn't a fool. If James brought a woman home, it meant something.
James frowned. Was Rhett helping Kristin? But to James, Rhett was coldblooded without feelings, not easily moved by anyone.
Kristin said nothing, almost burying her head in his chest.
“Mr. FitzGerald hasn't had breakfast, right? Kris made it, care for a taste?” James asked, hugging Kristin tight.
Kristin stiffened her body, her eyes reddening.
Rhett glanced at the dining table, and even from afar, he could smell the aroma.
11:40 Strangely, he wanted to taste Kristin's cooking.
James smirked with a deep meaning, suddenly feeling a sense of crisis.
If it were Vincent... he wouldn't give a damn. But as for Rhett, that was a different story.
“No thanks.” Rhett said gravely, giving Kristin a look as if offering her one last chance, Kristin kept her head down, silent the whole time.
“Take care, I'll host dinner tonight. My assistant will get in touch in advance,” James said as he watched Rhett leave.
Rhett’s expression was hard to read, his eyes somewhat complex. He'd actually felt an impulse to fight James for hei He wanted to know what deal James had made with Kristin and he could offer double.
But when the words reached his lips, reason ultimately prevalled.
Why bother over a woman who had fallen so low...
Rubbing his temples, Rhett spoke in a deep voice. “Look into the relationship between James and Kristin.” James definitely wouldn't just take someone hat a glance. This was James‘ home, and the fact that he didn’t bring women hwas common knowledge in their circles.
York stared at Rhett in shock. “Does Kristin... have a relationship with Mr. Bryce?” Chances were that Kristin had taken a hike to Crescendo Town for her new lover. “Kristin is a smart cookie. She knows you're a tough nut to crack that doesn’t fall for charms, so she made a beeline for Crescendo Town. James is... the only other guy besides you who could keep her safe. With her in Crestendo Town, Vincent and the Turner family can’t touch her.” Rhett glowered at York. “You can zip it now.” In the living room.
After Rhett left, Kristin stood silently, refusing to look up.
“I underestimated you... you've got sgame. Vincent's your fiancé, and you're even reeling in his brother?” James reached out and tilted Kristin's chin up.
He was feeling a bit sour, so his words cout a bit harsh.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmBut the moment he lifted Kristin's chin, James regretted it.
Because Kristin was crying. Tears streaked her face, and her eyes were red-rimmed.
“What are you crying for?” James frowned.
Was she upset because Rhett misunderstood her, or because she thought Rhett was 11:40 disappointed in her? “Got a thing for Rhett now?” James grew more irritable.
Kristin shook her head.
“Breakfast... got cold.” Kristin gestured towards the dining table, glanced at the clock, and then turned to bolt.
“Where do you think you're going, sit down and eat.” James wanted her to have breakfast. before leaving.
“I have to work. I'm going to be late.” Kristin said nervously.
“Take your phone. James pointed to the mobile on the table.
Kristin paused and then realized James had bought her a phone.
She picked up the phone, looked at it, then turned back to James. “Thank you...” The fingers of James’ hand holding the fork slowly tightened.
After Kristin dashed out the door, James irritably tossed the fork away.
What on earth was he doing? At the Nightlight Club.
Work wasn’t busy during the day, mainly taking care of guests and checking out of private rooms or hotel rooms upstairs.
Yara also arrived, grinning at Kristin. “Kris, got snew threads?” Kristin paused and glanced down at her dress, a gift from James.
“That outfit isn’t cheap, huh?” Yara continued.
Kristin nodded slightly.
“Kristin.” Harriet burst in, all hustle and bustle, and dragged Kristin off to the restroom. “What's the deal with you and Rhett? He's a big-tCEO! The richest of the rich! He draggedaround Crescendo Town looking for you all night. I'm worried sick you were in trouble... It seems like he really cares about you.”
