Chapter 550: Happy to See Someone You Tried to Kill? "I've learned enough to see the truth when it's right in front of me." Somto's mouth pressed into a thin line. He tried to speak, "I'm not-" but the words died before they left his tongue.
The lie was already cracked wide open.
Arthur, silent as ever, was still watching her. His expression hadn't changed, but his eyes had that subtle sharpness, like he was filing away every detail of this moment.
Somto finally voiced the question both men were thinking.
"...How do you know?" "Obviously because I—" Nnenna's mouth snapped shut.
Oh no. She had been this close to blurting out the truth about the Love System.
What a rookie mistake.
Not only would they probably never believe her, she wasn't even sure she wanted them to know.
"I... I—" she stammered, the sudden hesitation drawing even more curious stares from the two men. Somto glanced at Arthur again, silently asking the squestion, What on earth is so hard for her to say? Then, like a puzzle piece clicking into place, the thought hit him.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtWait... could it be? "Did you... take our pulse when we were still unconscious?" Somto asked, his voice now carrying that faint ah ha tone.
It made sense. She had finished her exams and stepped into year four as a medical student. Checking a patient's pulse without equipment was second nature, Carl did it all the twhen nothing else was available.
Arthur's eyes shifted slightly, the smallest flicker of realization passing through them. She had indeed woken before they did.
Nnenna froze. "...Uhm." She didn't want to lie. But telling them the truth? Absolutely not.
"I... uhm..." Whoosh! The door slid open without warning. All three turned instantly, sharp gazes locking on the entrance, their earlier argument vanishing in a heartbeat.
An average looking man stepped inside. He wasn't striking, but there was something in his bearing, calm, capable, and quietly confident.
"Prince Arthur. General Somto. Princess Nnenna," he greeted with a polite nod. "Good morning. I trust you're feeling better?" He stepped further in, his eyes flicking between them. "We had planned to give you separate rooms, but our queen felt princess Nnenna might prefer to stay close to you, Somto." When his gaze landed on Nnenna, there was a trace of warmth, almost too friendly.
Somto wasn't buying it. "So, are you going to tell us why we were kidnapped, or what? You spent too many resources pulling this off. The least you can do is explain." The man didn't flinch. If anything, his expression remained politely unshaken.
"Join our queen for breakfast, and you'll have your answers. Shall we?" He gestured toward the open door.
The three of them exchanged quick glances. After a brief moment of silent calculation, they filed out together. They followed the man into a corridor lined with walls that gleamed faintly under the soft glow of concealed lighting. The air smelled faintly of sandalwood, clean, expensive, and controlled.
Their footsteps echoed on polished marble floors, broken only by the faint rustle of distant activity. The hall stretched long, flanked by tall glass panels that offered teasing glimpses of manicured gardens and fountains outside.
Each alcove they passed displayed art, paintings and sculptures that weren't just beautiful, but carried a quiet weight, the kind born of history and influence.
Somto's eyes scanned the corners, noting the subtle placement of security features, almost invisible to an untrained eye. Arthur glanced at the ceiling briefly, catching the faint shimmer of motion sensors before letting his gaze drift casually forward. Nnenna took it all in silently, her mind working behind an unreadable face.
They reached the elevator, sleek, with a mirrored interior that reflected their expressions back at them. The ride down was smooth, almost too smooth, as if the entire building was engineered to make movement feel effortless.
When the doors opened, a deeper hush greeted them. The air here was cooler, scented with something floral and faintly sweet. They stepped into another corridor, shorter this time, leading to tall double doors inlaid with intricate gold patterns.
The door whooshed open with ease as they approached, and the dining hall revealed itself in full.
It was wide and airy, with a vaulted ceiling supported by elegant pillars. Crystal chandeliers bathed the room in warm light, casting faint rainbows on the long table set with precision. Silver cutlery gleamed against fine china, and the scent of fresh baked bread and herbs lingered in the air.
At the far end of the table, on the main seat, sat a woman. She looked young, but there was nothing soft about her presence. Her posture was straight, her hands resting lightly on the table, and her face was expressionless, neither welcoming nor hostile, only... measuring.
The woman's gaze lifted as they entered. Her eyes scanned the group briefly, then landed on Nnenna.
For a heartbeat, her expression faltered, almost as if she had seen a ghost. Then, a soft smile broke across her face.
"You... I'm so happy to see you, dear."
Her voice was warm, genuinely so, which made Nnenna pause. Arthur's brow furrowed, his guarded composure slipping just enough to show surprise. But nothing shocked them more than the fact that..... the woman looked like Nnenna. Seyes. Sjawline. As if they were carved from the smold, yet separated by years and circumstance.
The woman stood, her chair sliding back with a faint scrape, and m approached with unhumled grace.
She extended her hand toward Nnenna, her smile widening- -but before she could touch her, a shadow moved between them.
Somto.
His tall frblocked her completely, his expression unreadable but his voice sharp.
"You must have a short term memory, Athena," he said, tone cold enough to frost the air. "How can you be happy to see someone you tried to kill?" A flicker of surprise passed over her face, quick, but real.
"You seem to find joy in accusing me." she said slowly, the warmth in her tone cooling.
