Above all, however, there was one problem Rita had to go through first-confronting her father's interrogation.
That evening, as she entered her family hand changed her shoes in the hallway, she noticed Donna shaking
her head subtly at her.
"Your father isn't in a good mood," Donna remarked quietly.
Rita nodded. She knew that Donna cared about her and always had a knack for preemptively gauging the
atmosphere. "Okay. Is there anything special for dinner tonight?" Rita attempted to lighten the mood with a
smile.
"When have | ever failed to cook your favorite dish when you're here? If only you'd cback more frequently
so my cooking skills wouldn't go to waste,” Donna replied warmly.
Their hushed conversation unexpectedly caught the attention of someone else.
"You have snerve asking if she cooked something special for you? Don't you find that embarrassing?"
Sadie's voice resonated from upstairs. She stood haughtily with her arms folded and glared at Rita disdainfully.
Rita ignored Sadie and continued to talk to Donna. "I'll bring you over to my place when things go well forat
my job. Then you can cook forevery day," she quipped.
Donna nodded. "That sounds wonderful. I'll be more than happy to take care of you for the rest of your life."
"Are
you deaf? Can't you hear me? If | were in your position, I'd never set foot in the Russell household again," Sadie

in this villa and be an eyesore. And you always say that Dad doesn't treat you well,” Sadie continued.
Rita did not respond to Sadie; her father's opinion was the only one that mattered to her. Aside from Donna's, of
course. Everyone else's opinion did not matter to her.
On the other hand, Donna could not bring herself to remain silent at Sadie's harsh words. "Miss Sadie, those are
merely rumors. How can you take them at face value? In my opinion, you should focus more on your studies
rather than on this sort of idle gossip."
Infuriated by Donna's intervention, Sadie lashed out, "Who do you think you are? You're just a servant. How dare
you use that tone with me!"
Donna bowed and recognized the truth in Sadie's words. Though she was angry, she understood the dynamics of
the household. Sadie and Karen did not treat the servants with care and consideration, unlike Rita's mother Taya
who viewed everyone as part of one family.

"Watch your words," Rita interjected and turned to face Sadie. She stood several inches taller than her, so her
sense of superiority over Sadie seemed to be more profound.
"Ah, yes, that's all you can do.
