Chapter 1736

Emily’s phone beeped with an incoming message; she glanced at the screen to

find it was a message from Gavin, saying “Emily, I have something to attend to

and need to leave. Can you take care of Mr. James for now?”

Emily clenched her teeth in frustration. “Are you doing this on purpose?” she

texted back.

Gavin was quick to defend himself. “I swear, I’m not. I’ll be back soon. Please,

just help me out for now.”

Taking a deep breath, Emily put her phone down and picked up the glass of

water, heading back to the bedroom.

When she entered the bedroom, she saw that Charlie had fallen asleep. She put

the glass on the bedside table, intending to cover him with the blanket before

leaving.

“It’s hot,’ Charlie muttered, pushing the blanket away.

Thinking that he might be awake, she asked, “Want some more water?”

Charlie slowly opened his eyes and stared at her intently. “Emily?”

“Yes,’ she replied, nodding slightly.

Suddenly, Charlie grabbed her wrist, pulling her down onto the bed. He then

leaned over her, his eyes fixed on her.

Startled, Emily tried to break free.

Charlie kept a tight grip on her wrist, and his voice was hoarse as he asked.

“Why are you here?”

“You’re drunk!” Emily tried to wriggle out of his grasp. “Charlie, stop messing

around!”

“I’m not messing around!” Charlie’s voice was husky as he stared directly at

Emily, who was beneath him. His eyes held a hint of bitterness. “You told me to

let you go, and I did. What else do you want from me?”

Emily’s struggle paused, and her wide eyes filled with astonishment as she

stared at Charlie.

Charlie swallowed hard. “I just can’t forget you, Emily. I don’t know what to do.

Tell me, what should I do?”

“For these two years you’ve been away, I’ve missed you so much. But I couldn’t

tell anyone. Falling for you feels like a joke. I’ve been lying to myself that you

also have a slight affection for me. I forced you to stay by my side, even though

I knew you didn’t want to.”

“I hated myself for pressuring you in so many ways. I didn’t know why I’d turned

into this. I convinced myself to let you go, but every day after I did, I’ve regretted

it! When I see you unhappy, I’ve even thought about bringing Kya’’s father back

for you. If he didn’t like you, I would give him money to make him like you, just to

see you happy.”

“I don’t care how pathetic I’ve become. I just can’t stand the thought of losing

you. If you find the person you love, does that mean I have absolutely no

chance left? Emily, why don’t you love me? I won’t be unfaithful, and I won’t

force you into anything. I don’t mind that you’ve had a child with another man.

Can’t you just like me a little?”

Emily had stopped struggling and was staring at Charlie with tears streaming

down her face.

Charlie suddenly felt a bit panicked, and raised his hand to wipe her tears away.

“Don’t cry. It hurts me deeply every time I see you cry. I hate myself for making

you sad.”

Emily sobbed, “Charlie, I hate myself, too. I’m not brave enough, not good

enough. And I can’t escape the constraints of my family. I don’t deserve you. I’ve

tried so hard, just to be a little closer to you.”

There was a deep sadness in Charlie’s eyes as he pressed his forehead against

hers, whispering her name.

“Emily, Emily”

The curtain was drawn open, and the moonlight poured into the room, bathing

Emily’s tear-streaked face in a gentle glow. Her eyes were clear but filled with

sorrow.

Charlie fell asleep next to her after a while. Emily moved him to the side, gazing

at his handsome, gentle face with a heavy heart.

No matter what her future held, having a man love her like this made her

content.

Emily sat with him for a while, wiping the tears away from her face, and covered

Charlie with the blanket.

Leaning over, she touched her forehead to his cheek and whispered.
