Chapter 96 ~ Break a sweat
ALEX
My fists launch forward as | hit the punching bag, sending it flying before swinging back to me.
I'm shirtless, soaked in sweat, muscles burning, lungs dragging in air like I've just run through hell.
| need the pain.
I need the adrenaline
| need anything that'll keep her out of my damn head.
It's like Athena wants to be buried deep In my bones and won't leavethe fuck alone. | don't like her, so you
can imagine the way | feel when | can't stop thinking about how she looked in that damn grocery store.
That fucking long black hair. Remindsof the times | used to curl my hands around it while I....
Fuck!
| hit the bag again. Harder. My knuckles sting. The chains creak. The bag swings back like it's taunting me.
Because if | slow down if | stop, I'll start thinking. And if | start thinking, I'll see her again. Standing in the middle
of the cheese aisle like she never left. Like we hadn't torn each other to pieces.
Her ntastes like fire on my tongue, and | hate that | even remember how she smells.
God, she looked good. Too good. Way too unbothered for a woman who once lovedlike there was no
tomorrow.
It's pretty impressive if you ask me.
How she moved on without a care in the world. | eventually gave her the address
of where my son was laid. Every week when | go there | find flowers and the place cleaned.
Which makesso fucking mad. Why did she try to abort if she gave a damn?
And Rayen?

Don't even getstarted. The little traitor damn near dragged her into our future like | hadn't already buried
her in our past.
"Daddy she looks like a Princess," he said.
What kind of poetic crap is that?
| grunt and throw a brutal uppercut, my abs flexing, sweat dripping down my spine.
No. She doesn't get to sneak in like that.
Not in my head.
Not in his life.
| jab left. Then right. Again. And again. Until my arms go numb. Until my body trembles from the effort of holding
it together.
The gym lights flicker overhead, casting shadows over the raw edge of my jaw and the clench in my back. My
chest heaves. The bag swings back lazily now mockingwith its silence.
The vibrating of my phone is What makesstop from tearing the punching bag. The screen flashes Leah.
| slide right.
"Ever since | had Rayen, you answer the phone within a second." She purrs.
| don't know if that's supposed to be funny, but | don't hear myself laughing. Neither does she.
"I have a dinner to attend. Its for work, all the doctors are gathering to welcthe others and launch the -"
"Why didn't you drop him off at mum's?" | cut her off knowing she's probably calling because of Rayen.
TE Le [1™
"Go with him, I'll pick him up in thirty minutes."
"You wantto take him to the banquet?” Her voice is shocked and a hint of displeasure.
"Yes. Is that a problem?"
"No..no.." She clears her throat. "I'll go with him"
| hang up without another word. | rest my forehead against the cool wall of the gym, eyes closed, chest still
heaving.
Rayen at a dinner with Leah and a bunch of pretentious doctors? He's going to hate that.
| swipe a towel off the bench and drag it across my face. My reflection in the gym mirror stares back, red
knuckles, clenched jaw, the kind of storm in my eyes that's always just one spark away from exploding.
Releasing a deep breath,
| grab my hoodie from the bench and throw it on, the fabric clinging to my sweat-
soaked skin.
Thirty minutes.
That's how long | have to pull myself together.
| head to the locker room, stripping off the gloves, flexing my fingers even though
every joint screams in protest.
Pain | can handle. It's the silence
that | can't. The fet

Looking at my watch, | realize | won't have enough tto get home, shower and

Except with her.
| never did mind sharing with her.
Even when she would take a sip from my glass, I'd willingly use the sspot.
Shaking my head, | head to the gym shower and later change into my black pants and white button up shirt.
By the t| pull up to the hotel where the banquet's being held, I'm sure It will be a quick hi and pick up my
son.
Imagine my shock the second | walk through the glass doors and see her. Standing there.
In a dress that hugs every part of her | shouldn't be looking at.
| sweep my eyes and follow the source of her smile making my insides turn.
What is she doing with Rayen?
Why is she smiling at him and
Where the fuck is his mother?
| watch Rayen's hand is in hers, and his smile stretches ear to ear.
My jaw tightens. My fists clench again as | walk towards them.
Athena lifts her gaze.
And our eyes lock.
