Regret 36 Over the next two days, every one of Charlotte's scheduled surgeries was inexplicably reassigned. Then, without warning, she was transferred out of her department and assigned to the ER.

Clutching the transfer notice, Charlotte marched straight to Director Fontaine's office and knocked on the door.

When she heard his reply, she entered and got right to the point. "Director Fontaine, what's the meaning of this unauthorized position change? Last I checked, I don't report directly to you." Director Fontaine paused in his work, barely glancing up at her, a smirk curling at the corner of his mouth. "The ER's short-staffed, and you've had a light schedule lately. I moved you to help out-do you have a problem with that?" “Light schedule?” Charlotte let out a sharp laugh. “All six of my surgeries for the past three days were reassigned for no reason. We're already short on surgeons-if you keep shuffling people around like this, when are the rest of us supposed to get any rest?" "That's not your concern," Director Fontaine replied, tapping his fingers impatiently on the desk. "The administration approved the change. If you have a problem, take it up with them. Don't botherwith it." Charlotte opened her mouth to argue, but just then a nurse burst through the door. "Director, it's bad-Dr. Sinclair collapsed in the OR. The patient's in critical condition!" "What?" Fontaine shot to his feet, clearly caught off guard by the emergency.

He recovered quickly. "Where's everyone else?" The nurse shook her head. "We're short on surgeons, sir. The others are all tied up with their own cases. There's no one available." Charlotte shot Fontaine a pointed look and let out a cold laugh. "Well, Director Fontaine, this is your brilliant staffing plan. Good luck explaining it to the board." She spun on her heel and walked out.

After quickly changing into scrubs, Charlotte rushed to the operating room.

Fortunately, the patient's condition was manageable. Ninety minutes later, the procedure was done, and Charlotte headed to the break room next door to check 08:42 Chapter 36 on Dr. Sinclair.

He was stretched out on a couch, pale and weak, receiving a glucose IV from a group of nurses and his medical assistant.

When the assistant saw Charlotte, he strode over, his voice tight with anger. "Dr. Sterling, this was supposed to be your surgery today. Why did my mentor have to take it on? He's been working for more than forty-eight hours straight-are you trying to kill him?" Charlotte was taken aback for a moment, her gaze dropping. "This wasn't my decision." He scoffed. “In surgery, who else has the authority to change your schedule? Everyone knows you're the best lead surgeon we have. No one else can do the things you do. The chief lets you set your own schedule. Don't tellsomeone else made you step aside." Seeing the disbelief on his face, Charlotte sighed. "Ask Director Fontaine. The decision cfrom him."

Just then, Tricia strolled in with Director Fontaine. Fontaine didn't miss a beat. "Dr Stekling, I'm om shocked. Even if I reassigned your post, you control your own surgeries.

Don't try to pin this on me." A flash of astonishment crossed Charlotte's face. She hadn't expected him to deny it so brazenly.

In an instant, her expression darkened. They weren't trying to sabotage her behind her back anymore-they were doing it right in front of her.

Tricia covered her mouth in mock surprise. "Dr. Sterling, the OR is your domain. If you chose to leave, how can you blDirector Fontaine?" Watching Charlotte's face go pale, Tricia felt a surge of satisfaction.

Fontaine had reported the transfer to the administration, carefully omitting the fact that Charlotte had standing surgeries scheduled. If she missed them, the official record would show she'd abandoned her responsibilities. Even if Charlotte protested, Fontaine already had his defense prepared.

On top of that, with other doctors forced to cover her absence, om resentment was inevitable. As m O tensions mounted, how much longer could Charlotte hope to survive in this hospital?
